Chapter Seven

Pillow Talk

April breathed deeply as she held onto the doorknob and leaned back against the closed study door. It took all the courage she had to sign those papers and walk away from Lex.

Yes, she’d talked a good game. She’d judged him and his world. She’d gave a beautifully strong performance of being okay with the annulment, but the truth was, though she might not want the marriage, she still wanted the man. Badly.

Living here in a mini castle with the man she thought was going to be her very own Prince Charming? Too tempting.

April looked up from her suitcase still sitting there and up then up the stairs. She thought of the garment bags Lex had Sterling take to her room. Curiosity won out. She jogged up the stairs and walked into the bedroom to find the garment bags laying on the bed.

For me?

She moved to the bed and unzipped them all. They were at least a dozen outfits with shoes and matching purses. Some were a little conservative for her taste, but others suited her perfectly, especially the last. She gasped in pleasure and lifted the dress from the bag to hold up to the natural sunlight streaming through the bedroom window.

It was a beautiful creation by BCBG Max Azria. The stretch-silk-charmeuse cocktail dress was so simple yet feminine and so trendy yet also classic with spaghetti straps and a full skirt. It was exactly her style.

April turned to close the bedroom door and carefully laid the dress down on the bed as she began to undress. She pulled the sequin stilettos and matching clutch from the bottom of the bag.

Once dressed, with her feet pressed into her shoes, April studied the reflection. The cut and color of the dress fit her deep bronzed skin tone and her curvaceous body shape. All she needed was make-up and maybe twisting her hair into an up-do and she was all set to attend the wedding today with her husband.

It was obvious he had been banking on her staying on ... for a little while anyway.

Regardless of her reasons why, and no matter how justified she felt her reasons were, her revenge tactic had put him in one hellified situation, whether she agreed or not about how he chose to live his life.

April opened her door and smiled to find her little carry-on case sitting there. She was on her way to seek out Lex but she pulled it inside instead and took her time applying her make-up and jazzing up her hair.

When she was done, she studied her reflection. It was hard to escape the truth when it was staring you in the face. And the truth was she wasn’t quite ready to have Lex gone from her life from good. Not quite ready at all. Marriage or no marriage they shared a good time in Vegas. And now that they were on the same page about their marriage, some of her anger at him—some but not all—had dissipated.

April left her room again and carefully descended the stairs.
